The Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago) is one of the world’s most famous pilgrimages, dating back to the 9th century. Rather than being a single path, it is a network of pilgrimage routes that begin in different parts of Europe and lead to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, where the tomb of the Apostle Saint James the Greater is located.
Most pilgrims travel along the popular Camino Francés or the Portuguese Route. Today, more than 300,000 people each year journey along Europe’s oldest pilgrimage route on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback. Many pilgrims walk the Camino to honor Saint James, seek forgiveness, pray for healing, encounter God or find personal guidance.
The Camino also offers an opportunity for “slow travel,” allowing people to disconnect from the demands of daily life, reflect deeply, and challenge themselves both physically and mentally. Along the way, pilgrims often share their experiences with others, creating a unique sense of community, peace, and shared purpose.
If you would like to learn more about the Camino, you are invited to attend a presentation by Fr. Higinio at St. Anne Church on June 10 at 2:00 p.m.
