A Few Words About Me….
I am originally from New York.
I was a Second Vice President in a Japanese bank, which I considered my second family. Learned to understand and respect the Japanese culture, which in many ways are so different from ours.
When my company closed their doors in 1996, I decided to listen to my heart, and did volunteer work at St. Anthony parish, in Oceanside. One of the first events I volunteered for, was an “Interfaith Thanksgiving Day Dinner”, to be held at our parish. We invited all people; homeless, elderly, people alone for the holidays and all who wanted to attend.
I volunteered to work in the kitchen, I wouldn’t have to deal with the people coming in. After about an hour of kitchen work, the Ministry Coordinator came in and asked all the people working the kitchen to wash their hands and switch with the people greeting the guests. Well, that certainly put me on the spot, it was not something I had signed up for. She saw the look on my face and said “the first few people that you shake hands with will be the hardest, trust me”.
I often tell people this story, she was right. I thought I was giving so much of myself, to be there on Thanksgiving Day, when I should have been at my home cooking for all of my family who were coming for dinner. I cried all the way home! Jesus opened my eyes and my heart to the needs of others, what they had done for me. I have been “hooked” ever since. Jesus has a gentle way of nudging you in the right direction.
I have experienced something that people read and say, “what a nice story”. If you truly want to know what this feel like, please come and volunteer at St. Anne Parish, you won’t be disappointed!
